Workers pick tomatoes in a field in Los Banos. Even though they start very early in the morning (5 am), around 9 am it starts getting really hot. Most workers wear long sleeves for protection from the sun and mosquitos. Tomato picking is done by contract, meaning workers get paid per bucket picked. Each bucket weights about 25 pounds and is worth 74 cents. The average amount per worker according to one of the supervisors is 200 to 250 buckets a day. Workers run with their buckets with a card attached to their hats or clothes, which gets punch holed every time they fill and deliver a bucket to a truck. According the law, when the temperature reaches 80°F (26.6°c) there should be shade where farm workers can take breaks. They should be allowed to take a 5 minute (or as long as needed) break if they start feeling bad and this should be paid time. When the temperature reaches 95°F (35°c) they should automatically be given a 10 minute break and there should a plan of how to proceed in case of an emergency.
